Focused on understanding the stages people go through when changing behavior. Mostly applied to address change in smoking behavior, but widely applied beyond that (bullying, at-risk behavior, safe sex, violence, etc. ) Emphasizes failure of most interventions because they target people as if they are ready to change. We need a flexible approach to change and recognize that people are at different stages of readiness to embrace that change. Primary assumption: the beliefs that individuals create and develop and hold to be true about themselves form the very foundation of human agency and are vital forces in their success or failure in all endeavors . Self-efficacy is confidence in one"s ability to do what s/he wants, needs, or tries to do.
