Case study: larry summers in 2005-06; kinsey reports. Shift emphasis tracking consequences in the history of modern science. 2005 speech: position of women and color in science and engineering. Hosted by ntl bureau of economic research. Fewer women in men in science & engineering. Women have reluctance to work long hours b/c have responsibility of caregiving; not willing to sacrifice and turn back on family to advance self professionally. Natural aptitude differences: men may be genetically predisposed to be geniuses more. Women may be less likely to be either very good or very bad at science than men, based on stats and variance. Critical point of variance, top of class would be a man. Reactions: offended a lot of people, people left the auditorium. Esp for people who say him as an ally for women in engineering. Vote of no confidence for this and other infractions.
