Document Summary
Different examples of power has characteristics of different types of power. Power by dominance: force others to behave as you desire. Ex: hospitals still act as gatekeepers to check who gets access to healthcare. Control over others/to access institutional power. Power by consent: convince others to behave as you want. The convincing could have been done in the past (by a group), and current people are still using that same power from the past. Not always intentional; convinces others they deserve to be in power. People have access to resources but don"t always use them to get what they need. Hegemonic groups: understood as being in power. Experts (medical , religious, etc. ) are less questioned. Relationships between types of power family dynamics. Situations are not always clear cut: dominance vs. consent. Aspects of both at one time (people with different roles) Can change over time (new group becomes established)
