Ns2 /nep is key protein and a nuclear export protein: takes nucleocapsid from progeny to plasma membrane. Cleaved into ha1 and ha2 and retained with disulfide bonds. Important for cell attachment with sialic acid residues. Neuramidase, alpha glyosidic (alpha 2,3) and (alphas 2,6) Catalyze the cleavage of glyosidic linkage assists in release of viruses that are budding from the cell. Both are neuramidase inhibitors that help lower yield of infected cell. Introduce large number of susceptible individuals with no immunity into the epidemic/ pandemic population. Introduce a new virus in a population with no immunity. All viruses undergo mutation because rna polymerase makes mistakes and isn"t advanced in replication. Virus that has novel constellation of 2 virus genes. Change in activity of both ha and na or just ha due to reassortment. Influenza a virus reservoir not limited to humans; but includes other animals. Change in ha and or na antigenic structure that effectively circumvents pre-existing immunity.
