MCDB 134 Lecture 25: Lecture 25 (vaccines)
Document Summary
Therapy finds viral gene product, makes specific, selective agent to target viral gene product that is not toxic to the host. influenza: m2 ion channel. Hsv: acyclovir, thymidine kinase activates inhibitor. inhibitor deactivates viral. *stimulates immune system to induce protective state without causing disease. humoral responses---> antibody generation cellular responses--->cytotoxic lymphocytes (ctl) innate responses---> interferons (virus type, non-specific) 2 types of pox viruses, which made it easy. Leads to transient viremia---> skin/ epidermal cells (cause lesions, pustules, and crust) Observed that milkmaids= cowpox virus, which protected them against small pox. Introduce a foreign protein (antigen)--> causes an immune response in b and t cells. Antibodies neutralizes antigens/ block attachment of virion to host cells so virus can"t bind to cell surface receptors. Selectively attack and mediate lysis of viral infected cells. Will replicate, but won"t cause disease because of many accumulated mutations. Virus strain is sent through many foreign host passages to accumulate mutations to get attenuated strain.
