Res publica: a thing belonging to the public. A state is meant to serve us, not only give us security, taxation, basic public goods. Provides a vehicle that allows us to become the kind of people we want to me. The best thing we can be, according to republican theorists, is to be a good citizen. Should mold us and create us into who we want to be. Allows us to have a society of friends as opposed to a society of visitors (traitors?) Anonymity and individualization cannot exist in a republican society. Served athenians as military general during the first third of the peloponnesian war. Hearing about other people/actually discussing their lives is important. Ultimate interest is the history of athens and why it is great.
