Rise of nazis: escaped to czechoslovakia france. Taught at notre dame, princeton, northwestern, uc berkeley, u of chicago. One of the most important contemporary figures in political theory. Initially had outer freedom: ability to engage in a community. In its simplest form we are free and hence responsible according to the principle of causality no less self evident truth subject to causation (page???) Freedom is the product of some kind of events that stretches beyond our individual choice. We are subject to certain causal forces. On one hand, we are free walking and talking individuals, but on the other, we are all billiard balls rolling around depending on the will of the cue ball (not us). Kant: we are both free actors making choices for ourselves and also the product of the series of events that happened before (and during) our lifetime. Recognize that we are both parts at the same times.
