POL S 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Irony, Making Money, Junk Food
Document Summary
City (bottom) laborers, merchants, performers, economic actors (mid) auxiliaries (top) guardians (noble enough to rule) Socratic irony: prodding to make stuff come out into conversation. Fine line between socratic irony and socratic ignorance. Guardians live communally, it"s a good life but it isn"t the best. A just city is good as a whole, but you can"t separate out the good to each person. Depends on sacrifice/compromise per person (not one group"s happiness, but the happiness of the city) Can"t have too much wealth but can"t be too poor either. Too little life not worth living. P 115: if there is a wealthy city, you can"t think of it as a city. Can"t have a city of the wealthy in the same place as a city of the poor. If there are large gaps between rich and poor, there is not one conjoined city, there are two. City too divided is no longer one city.
