Mental disorders are problems in thinking/behavior that are disabling in everyday life and/or cause the person to be a danger to self or others. 25% of us will have a disabling mental disorder in their lifeimes. Most mental disorders arise unexpectedly and for no good reason: a lot have biological basis, but a lot don"t. Dsm5 lists over 500 major mental disorders, from depression to sexual disorders to drug and alcohol abuse to sleep disorders. Diagnosed from signs (visible) and symptoms (what the paient feels) Signs: agitaion, passivity, looking downcast, acing hyper, anger. Symptoms: hallucinaions, feeling all-powerful, feeling inadequate, feeling out of control. Many families act like mental disorders are a source of shame and embarrassment. Loss of interest in everyday aciviies and pleasures. Can be a single episode or repeated, but some people have dysthymia which is persistent depressive disorder (2yrs or more), major depressive disorder is chronic/pervasive/persistent low mood.
