BIOE 20C Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Mutation, Plinian Society, Biogeography
Document Summary
Grandfather erasmus -doctor and philosopher -support of lamarck"s theory of. Revolted by surgical procedures of the time (brutal, no anesthesia) Joins plinian society (naturalists) and mentored by robert grant. Dropped from medical school, didn"t become a doctor. On voyage read lyell"s principles of geology (biogeography) Documented geologic formations that supported lyell"s theory. Different populations in different locations had different traits that were specialized. One trait of one species impacts another. Large fossils that were sloth and armadillo-like. Several years with other scientists working to organize and catalog collected specimens. Wallace and darwin publish similar ideas of evolution. Evolution of new species occurs via descent with modification of existing species and the mechanism for this is natural selection. Population (smallest unit capable of evolution) change overtime. Population can reproduce beyond the resources that can sustain them. More offspring = bigger influence on population. Fitness = how many offspring produced relatively to others within the population.
