ANTH 23 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Allan Bloom, Korean Studies, Japanese Studies
Document Summary
Instead of learning about the same great books as everybody else, blacks learn about black studies, multiculturalism, black authors, affirmative action, etc. Classes on particular groups: ex: japanese studies classes, korean studies classes, etc. Comparative/integrative classes: diverse views on american society like this class (ex: anth 23) Add on to existing classes, ex: taking authors of multicultural backgrounds. Ghettoization : not actual ghettoization, but more of just hanging out with your own ethnic group. Timely debate about these topics: more focus on stem recently, more funding pushed into stem-related subjects, etc. Individual and structural racism: identify individual racists and get rid of discriminatory beliefs vs large-scale govt programs such as affirmative action. How to cope: colorblind or color conscious. Structural vulnerability and/or violence: structural vulnerability checklist (look at ways people have been systematically been made vulnerable) vs cultural consciousness curriculum. Shown that it is better to not assimilate or else might assimilate to underclass.
