COGS 101A Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Retinal Ganglion Cell, Rhesus Macaque, Optic Chiasm
● Primary Vis Path
○ Ganglion axon pathway
■ Contralateral representation of visual space
● Crossover, left world goes to right hemisphere and v.v.
■ Temporal pathway: visu info outside by temples
■ Nasal pathway: vis info inside retina
● Where the optic nerve from left and right eyes meet and info from
nasal sides of the retinas cross
■ Optic Chiasm
● Where optic nerve left and right eye meet and info from nasal
pathway cross
■ Optic tract
● Cont. of optic nerve that relays info from optic chiasm to ipsilateral
lgn
○ Lateral Geniculate Nucleus
■ “Relay station” or “hub” where a lot of sensory processing happens
● Keeps info separate
■ In thalamus and bilateral
■ 6 layers
● Info is kept separate so info is preserved
■ Magnocellular pathway
● Larger cells
● 1-2
● Ganglion cell: parasol
○ Rod + cones
○ Lots of convergence
○ Light but not color
○ Motion detection
■ Parvocellular pathway
● Smaller cells
● 3-6
● Ganglion cell: midget
○ Single cone
○ No convergence
○ Most fine detail
○ Color
○ Depth
■ Koniocellular pathway
● Even smaller cells
● Under the 6 layers
● Ganglion cell: Bistratified
○ Cones
○ Some convergence
