Outline lecture two the challenge of the jesus movement. There was a focus on making them a spectacle and inclusive. While most religions were very singular and exclusive these state-sanctioned religions were very loose with their requirements. These religions were a way to assure social stability as they were the kind of common ground between citizens. Romans were trying to have all citizens uniformly believe and practice faith. Essentially, they were turning all citizens into roman subjects by having them all follow the same religion: forms of worship not officially sanctioned by the state were many times found to be threatening and malicious. Ii) a new interpretation of tradition: the theological debate within judaism, following the destruction of the second temple in 70 c. e. by the romans. The first temple was the one solomon had built and was later destroyed by the neo- Babylonians: main factions: pharisees, sadducees, and essenes (1) pharisees were the main interpreters of the torah.
