Document Summary

After the death of the 1st wave of rock and roll as the dominant form of teen dance music, the stylistic considerations of the pop charts became nebulous before solidifying around the motown sound. The pop charts were dominated by singles and the album charts were dominated by lps, and by the early 1960s they began to diverge. Folk music gained popularity in the early 1960s and took a place alongside jazz as a serious listening music amongst teenage and college-age music fans. In 1963, both the album and singles charts had become so diverse that the distinction between coded white music and coded black music was briefly dropped. The beatles are genuine rock stars in england, and their performance at the royal variety show broadens their appeal as counterculture figures as well as teenage entertainers. She loves you is #1 in britain, but only sells 1k copies in us when first released on parlophone.
