Document Summary

Pharmacokinetics: area of pharmacology dealing with the absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion of drugs. Factors of pharmacokinetics: route of administration, absorption and distribution. Routes of administration: oral: via the mouth, parenteral injection: through the skin. Make bubble under surface of skin and drug seeps way through the skin line, so drug lasts for a long time. Stick into fibers of muscle that are dense; harder to get out so drug lasts for a long time. Stick straight into a vein (not an artery) Less than 10 seconds to reach the vein. In small animals, put into the space between the peritoneal and the gut: pulmonary absorption (inhalation): relatively fast. Want the drug to hit the lungs or want the drug to act relatively quickly: topical application: patches. Usually requires type of solvent that get across the skin, but not good for your skin. Blood circulation at the site of administration. Drug distribution: drug transport across membranes.
