Classes of psychoactive drugs: usually categorized by how they are used behaviorally, all drugs were used medicinally at some point. No link between legality and abuse potential: opiates (narcotics)- morphine, heroin, codeine, hydrocodone (vicodin), dilaudid, demerol, depressants- barbiturates (seconol, nembutal), benzodiazepines (diazepam/valium, History of drug abuse: drug abuse is largely man-made, corporate-developed, and government-endorsed problem. Mentioned in iliad and odyssey, use documented in egypt. Grows wild in asia, ranges from greece to china. Most legal production is in india and turkey. May think of people from this time as being bad and drugged up a lot, but there were not a lot of medicines that worked, this did. Even back then, some thought they were bad. They were used for everything: couch syrup, teething aid, etc: heroin was marketed as replacement for morphine. Marketed heavily by drug companies as a cough remedy without morphine"s side effects.
