PSYC 188 Lecture 2: Mechanisms of Self-Regulation
Document Summary
Development of failure (aka initial lapse to snowballing) Longer you do something, harder it is to stop. Hard to stop in the middle; get thoughts about something you started but didn"t finish (lack of closure) Getting gold at the olympics in 6 months. Making varsity team while trying to get all a+ Over/under estimation of the extent to which certain behaviors/beliefs are typical of others. Alcohol -> alcohol myopia (focusing on immediate events instead of long- term consequences) Can"t see past the immediate stimulus environment (can"t see future consequences of behavior) Absolutely no misstep/violation allowed because it will lead to disaster. Very effective if you don"t break the rule. Problem: when you cross the line, there"s no reason to stop because you think you"re doomed. Failed anyway, what the hell, might as well do more. Weakness for ice cream or cheesecake while on diet. Fails to control (overdoing or doing it wrong) Non-optimal/counterintuitive efforts to self-reg; set up by underregulation.
