Look at how to write a scientific paper and then read the readings: midterm next tuesday- includes up to todays lecture. At the surface : neuston organisms live at the surface of the water. Some siphonophores with gas floats, they float on the surface and feed on planktonic organisms using stinging cells/tentacles that hang down: ex. - janthina- pelagic gastropod mollusc. Shell in thin and light, build a bubble raft to float, consumer of surface- dwelling cnidarians: micropredator. Sunlight is the primary base for the primary producers. Epipelagic zone: well lit, light and temp. decrease w/ depth, low productivity in oceanic compared to neritic, the diatoms and dinoflagellates and bacteria are feeding the microbial loop and it is included in the base for primary producers.
