Document Summary

Place of acceptance, pay to stay, with family/friends: homeless versus street people. Homeless people use the street for social, economic, and residential activities. Street people use it for social and economic activities, and sometimes residential activities. Street people claim public spaces, and might create friction with other users of this space (pedestrians, tourists, etc. : four types of homelessness. Common to be homeless, life on the edge, in and out of institutions. Increasing numbers of children (mostly boys), women, and families with single mothers: average: male, tends to be urban, only about 20% in the suburbs, polynucleated: many pockets of homeless people. Coping strategies: shelters, work to earn money, panhandling, social networks. Stigma prevents them with connecting with non-homeless. Physical disability and/or mental illness only increases stigma. Employers tend to avoid people coming out of certain institutions. Domicile (with homes) allies can lobby to help homeless: buffers mitigate depravation associated with homelessness. Social workers: not in my back yard (nimby) perspective.
