SOCI 118 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Gender Pay Gap, Androcentrism, Gender Binary
Document Summary
Modified patriarchies exist alongside formal gender inequality (w&f ch. 7) Androcentrism: men are culturally defined as human , unmarked, related to all. Gender binary is consistent with subordination and sexism but not. Subordination: masculinity = doing dominance, holding power. femininity= doing androcentrism deference. Sexism: girls/ women devalued compared to boys/men. Gender pay gap about 20 cents on the dollar. Difficult to study because reinforced at all levels of analysis. Human capital variables (education, experience, hours, skills) explain only a small proportion of wage gap. Of respondents, both open and stealth, report new male advantage. Human capital is perceived as more valuable, when it belongs to men. Given more respect and recognition for hard work. Gained body privilege free from sexual harassment.
