Lecture eighteen: paying for the party: how college maintains inequality 03/06/19. Armstrong and hamilton moved into dorm at a large midwestern. Spent year occupying a room for several days/week. Interviewed 48 women at least 2x over five years. Found that sexual and social life shaped acad. Students seemingly changed a great deal during these five years. They often tried on new selves, attempted different courses of action, and in time, reinterpreted past events (p. 270) Longitudinal data more meaningful than a single snapshot. Ended up by finding the reproduction of social class. Despite variation among students and within each student"s life-overtime common patterns and stability. Initial expectations that public universities -> social mobility for the citizens" children. Instead researchers found that public university"s party pathways ended up privileging those already in middle- and upper-class while penalizing others. Schools allow/encourage parties, support sororities and fraternities with subsidized property and limited policing. Easy majors, and provide networks for careers where social ties matter.
