States typically have populations in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. In the modern world, the only upper limit to state growth is the amount of food that it can grow: agricultural revolution technology drives the stages of agriculture (i. e. , intensive agriculture run by man power) In terms of subsistence systems, states at the very least need to employ a strong form of agriculture: all states make use of some form of agricultural intensification, whether it is fertilization, irrigation, etc. Technology needed for millions of people to produce enough food. In the modern world, most states have begun making use of industrialized agriculture in order to feed their populations (i. e. , corporations, technology, irrigation, etc. ) Social organization within a state is generally removed from kinship (aspects of state systems still rely on kinship system. i. e. , class systems, changes, opportunities, and prestige) States includes active nationalist construction (people understanding themselves as collective and an ethnic category)
