He was known as a soldier of fortune, an adventurer and a gentlemen and not an easy guy to get along with. He seizes the leadership of the colony and for a while he was successful. He expands the settlement and becomes best known for a somewhat fictionalized and romanticized encounter with pocahontas. Ould virginia key points: the encounters between john smith and the powhatan are skewed to suggest indian hostility. This is a suggestion that is not present in the john white drawings or the engravings by de bry. The harvest dance has been turned into a suggestion that they were very war like. In the middle you can see john smith who was taken captive by the powhatans.
