Document Summary
Developmental of reading and writing skills educ 205. In order to learn to read and write, children must understand the relationship between words" sounds and how they look on paper. If they have been read to in the early years, children learn faster. Hold books upright, turn pages left to right. Use pseudo-writing (more like drawing, pretending to write) Read some simple words ( rst words stop b/c of a stop sign) But still may reverse letters (esp. d p q) until about age 7. Realize that words consist of separate sounds that can be manipulated to make different words. Training in phonological awareness helps children read and spell. How can you help a child develop phonological awareness? (keep it fun) Making words on blackboard moving letters around, sounding words out. At age 5, most children examine words closely to look for patterns. Once children can detect individual phonemes and identify letters, they have cracked the code and begin reading.
