Not a practice that has emerged just over the past 40-45 years. In the past, it was less visible and less frequent: largely confined to the poor. States don"t enforce laws the way they used to. 1990-2010: 72% increase in # of unmarried couples living together. Separation rate: 5x that of married couples. 25% of americans have moral issues with cohabitation. Not long-term substitution for marriage in the us. Cohabiting couples break up or marry within 105 years & 9/10 do so in 5 years. 63% of american women who become pregnant marriage. African american cohabiting relationships last longer, are less often lead to marriage, and often have children involved. Students in activist communities on college campuses experiment with nontraditional family forms (cohabitation). Cohabitation becomes tracked in census data under a new category posslq: person of opposite sex sharing living quarters. Problems with this category: does not account for same-sex couples sharing living quarters, no differentiation of siblings, friends.
