A subset of authentic-assessment since not all authentic-assessment is performance-based. Students make a constructed response (as opposed to selecting a response form among options given to the students) They engage in higher-order thinking, with open-ended tasks. Tasks call for the integration of language skills. Depth of a student"s mastery is emphasized over breadth. Performances as assessment procedures need to be treated with the same rigor as traditional tests. Prepare students for performance in stepwise progressions. Use reliable evaluation form, checklist, or rating sheet (rubric) Treat performances as opportunities for giving feedback and provide that feedback systematically. Performance assessment therefore is not completely synonymous with the concept of alternative assessment; rather is is a primary trait of alternative assessment. Statements that describe what a student can perform at a particular point in time on a rating scale (also called band descriptors) Devices used to evaluate open-ended oral and written responses of learners.
