Wells fargo discriminates black & hispanic borrowers against whites: 3 components: I don"t like people with brown eyes ; personal reasons along with attitude toward that characteristic. Cognitive component, general knowledge: brown eyed people aren"t very smart . Illusory correlations purport stereotypes: associative meaning: 2 variables perceived as related because of person"s pre-existing beliefs, attend to things that are rarer; minority groups + negative events. Looting vs. finding : shared distinctiveness: minority member and negative event stand out and are attended to because they are both rare. Outgroup homogeneity effect-attending to visual cues around you not from other countries and places. Behavioral component: i refuse to play with brown eyed kids , prejudicial attitudes: old & new. Traditionally, attitudes were: freely expressed & largely negative. 1) symbolic: symbolic racism: attitudes expressed toward political issues that affect minorities rather than directly at minorities, not racist, but votes for a racist.
