Four basic types of tissue- epithelial tissue- covering (protect outside of everything) connective tissue- support (bone, blood, fat) (most diverse tissue type) (hold everything together) muscle tissue- movement: cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, smooth muscle nervous tissue- control. Tissue- a group of cells that are closely related to one another, relate in structure and function. Covers a body surface or lines a body cavity. Special characteristics of epithelia (pictures - page 65-66) Cell regions of the apical surface differ from the basal surface. Lost cells are quickly replaced by cell division. First name of tissue indicates number of cell layers. Single layer of cells attached to basement membrane. Basal layer of cells attached to basement membrane. Also can classify by the shape of the cells- last name of tissue describe shape. Cuboidal- cells are as wide as tall, like cubes. Columnar- cells are taller than they are wide, like columns (page 67 - functions)
