Imperialism is occurring (1850/1860), the world is becoming one place. European power starts conquering/dividing, making world one giant polity. Development of darwinism leads to scientific racism. Nationalism is both positive and negative; positive because strong military, loyal citizens / negative because blind loyalty, labeling of good guys/bad guys (us vs. them -- ex: immigrants), closing off from others (both literal and societal/cultural) Industrial warfare is picking up speed here; first genuinely modern wars. Belligerents mobilize their populations, economies, and armies. Industrial warfare influences everyone-- work on the homefront (factories), enormous casualties. Tendencies of fascism-- complete devotion to country, nothing else matters as much as your country (w/o state you are nothing) Discrediting of that ideology, which was very anti-democratic. Defeat of scientific racism and ideologies of racial inferiority. Un, imf, wb, gatt, nato, ecsc, warsaw pact (all deal with economics) Big ideal after wwii is how to keep another war from breaking out.
