Reaction to walt"s version of realism: individualism and materialism. Prefers a society approach, like the english school. The international system has a powerful social structure . Interests are not predetermined, but constructed by social cues and learning. Man makes history, but not in conditions of his choosing . Things which have a special meaning only by common agreement-- such as money. Shared notions of value, quality, interest, morality (justice, greed) Big thing now: status, esteem, ranking, respect. Anarchy is what states make of it -wendt. Think landmines-- they were once okay and gradually became common sense to not use. Bringing new ideas to the set of norms in society. Appropriate to present era = deepening international society, non-state actors. Sees social aspect of ir: legitimacy, repuation, shame, rivalry. Search for meanings as understood by actors. Does not have a simple grand narrative of the history.
