Conceptual variable: researcher"s definition of the variable in question at an abstract level. Operational variable: researcher"s specific decision about how to measure/manipulate the conceptual variable. Any conceptual variable can be operationalized in multiple ways. Self-report: operationalizes a variable by recording people"s answers to questions about themselves in a questionnaire or interview. Observational: operationalizes a variable by recording observable behaviors or physical traces of behaviors, also known as behavioral measure, for example, number of smiles, number of teeth marks pencil. Physiological: operationalizes a variable by recording biological data such as brain activity, or hormone level, usually requires the use of equipment to amplify, record, or analyze biological data. Categorical variables: a variable whose levels are categories, categories have no meaningful numerical value, also called nominal value, for example, sex. Quantitative variables: a variable whose values are recorded as meaningful numbers, for example, height and weight.
