A brief history of reproductive rights in america. 1873- anthony comstock, leader of the nyc society for the suppression of vice, successfully campaigns for the first of a series of laws that effectively makes birth control illegal in the us: k(cid:374)o(cid:449)(cid:374) as (cid:862)the co(cid:373)sto(cid:272)k la(cid:449)s(cid:863) 1916- margaret sanger opens the first bc clinic in brooklyn, nyc. 1918- bc is legalized (cid:862)to (cid:272)ure or pre(cid:448)e(cid:374)t disease(cid:863) 1921- sanger founded the american birth control league, a network of family planning clinics. 1937- the ama accepted fam planning as part of medical edu and practice. 1942- federal funding can be used for fam planning: the american birth control league changes its name to the planned parenthood. 1958- publicly financed health agencies were first allowed to offer fam planning services. 1960- 1st birth control pill, envoid, is fda approved for sale. 1965- in connecticut, last of comstock statues prohibiting the use of contraceptives struck down.
