Document Summary
Joints are the rigid elements of the skeleton that meet at sites called articulations. Structurally classified based on anatomy, functionally based on type and degree of movement. Criteria: presence or absence of synovial cavity (area filled with fluid that allows for greater mvmt) type of connective tissue binding bones together. Fibrous joints- the bones are held together by dense collagen fibers. Cartilaginous joints- bones are held together by cartilages. Synovial joints- bones are held together by ligaments. Suture joint held together with short fibers bone edges interlock found only in skull immobile. Syndesmosis joint held together by ligament fibrous tissue can have different lengths, but longer than sutures. Gomphosis peg-in-socket fibrous joint periodontal ligament that holds tooth in socket immobile. Synchondroses bones united by hyaline cartilages immovable. Symphyses bones united by fibrocartilage slightly movable. Synovial capsule: encloses synovial cavity like a sleeve. Fibrous layer: continuous with periosteum dense irregular connective tissue proper strengthens joint.
