PPE 3003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Penis Envy, Karen Horney, Neurosis
Document Summary
8: the goals of analytic therapy karen horney: horney states that her goal in therapy and freud"s goal in therapy have different objectives. Freud"s goal in therapy was to remove the patient"s symptoms through an understanding of the human personality; he focused on eradicating the symptoms rather than trying to cure the disorder. Horney, on the other hand, believed that symptoms could only be understood when one entered more deeply into the personality, and that upon deeper probing, she realized that much of the disorders in human relationships were determined by conflicts. Her goal in therapy was to find the root cause of the problem by helping people resolve said conflicts and achieve a harmony of feelings and sense of inner integration. What might be gained: acceptance of one"s true self, thus allowing growth and self-fulfillment.
