Social determinants are the social conditions of health in which people are born into, live, work, play and die- single most important determinant of health status. Health disparities are caused by modifiable social factors- explains health better than race/ethnicity. Medical care alone cannot manage health; social conditions need to also change. Health effect at place - living in a poor area is bad for long and short term health. Kids are especially vulnerable to unhealthy conditons (social and environmental) in homes and neighborhoods- affects their developing psyche. Where we live affects where we work, thus affecting: Cabot koppers- 90 acres around main street and nw 23rd avenue produced charcoal, turpentine, and other petroleum based products until 1967. Site is concerning because its located adjacent to residential areas, an elementary school and is only 2 miles from the city"s water supply. Family plays a role in social health determinates based on aces and intimate partner violence.
