Our backgrounds also in uence the type of theory created: where our paradigms come into play, have to explain cause of war. Empirical theory: focuses on observable facts and data, only deals with what is (what exists or what facts really are, can be tested using available data. Can have quantitative (gov"t statistics and hard numbers, gender can be assigned a number) and qualitative data (historical events, anything we cannot turn into numbers, primary and secondary sources, interviewing)
