The Evolution of Intelligence Testing
The Men Behind the Tests: Binet, Simon, Terman, and Wechsler
1. What is the Simon Binet scale?
The Simon Binet scale is a task-selection process that’s comprised of a variety of tasks Binet and Simon thought
were representative of typical children’s abilities at various ages. It’s a scale used to test children’s normal
functioning, and later used for comparing children’s mental abilities relative to their normal peers.
2. Why was it created? When was it created?
It was created because a French professional group for child psychology was called upon by the French
government to appoint a commission on the education of retarded children. The commission was asked to create a
mechanism for identifying students in need of alternative education.
3. What types of questions are on the test?
Questions most people would see and reflect as common sense, and many physical activities such as pointing to
certain body parts and repeating (7) random digits.
4. What does “mental age” refer to?
A children’s ability to normal functioning.
5. Why did Binet feel that the scale had limitations?
Because he stressed the remarkable diversity of intelligence and the subsequent need to study it using qualitative
as opposed to quantitative measures.
6. Why was the United States interested in the Binet Intelligence Test?
Because the business, civic, and education leaders in the United States needed a way to access the need of those
that were trying to apply for employment and meeting the demands of society.
7. What did Lewis Terman do to the Simon Binet Intelligence Test?
He decided to take the test, and revise it, and then introduce it to the American society on a larger scale.
8. Click on Lewis Terman. How is the Stanford-Binet test different from the original?
The Stanford-Binet test is different from the original test because, instead of trying to classify only of those with
mental retardation, or disabilities, the test was used to classify all students/children to make sure that delinquency
was reduced, favor those with high IQs, and unfavor those with low IQs.
9. What mathematical formula was born, thanks to Terman?
The IQ (Intelligence Quotient): (mental age/chronological age)x100
10. What did Terman think about gifted children?
He believed that the children who showed earliest signs of intelligence will be the ones who will most likely live a
successful life.
11. Individual Variations in Intelligence
A. What are intelligence tests?
Intelligence tests are tests that measures people’s mental aptitudes and compare them with other through
numerical scales. These tests are a modern reflection of this tendency.
B. How do you feel about the quote at the bottom of this page?
I feel like, although intelligence tests are necessary for certain environment and workplace, however,
there are abilities that can’t be measured by these tests, and it can’t measure all of the knowledge that one
might have.
12. Intelligence and Adaptability
A. What is the common theme of all definitions of intelligence?

They are both learning from two different experiences through two unrelated task, however, they tasks they"re doing are part of their environment: intelligence or intelligences, feel free to jot down a few ideas on spearman (if necessary) Spearman developed factor analysis, which help assessed different areas of knowledge.
