STAT 2000 Lecture 9: Lecture 9-MATERIAL CYCLES

29 views5 pages

Document Summary

* all atoms, elements, molecules, substances, etc. (all materials, organic or inorganic) get cycled through the environment. Some, however, are more important to living organisms & our study here. * those important to organisms (to live, grow & reproduce), are cycled between the nonliving (abiotic) and living (biotic) components of the environment, in what are known as the biogeochemical cycles. We will discuss the following: water, carbon, nitrogen, * the collection, purification, & distribution of the earth"s water supply through both the abiotic & biotic components of the environment. The steps of the water cycle consist of: evapotranspiration, condensation, Evapotranspiration (evaporation & transpiration), water changing from a liquid to a gas (evaporation) and the water given off by plants during the process of photosynthesis (transpiration). This then rises from the surface and into the air. Condensation: water changing form a gas (water vapor) to a liquid, often forming clouds in the sky.
