Dred scott, 1857: collapse of the second american party system. After ratifying the compromise of 1850 politicians thought they were done with the issue of slavery. In a couple of years slavery comes back as a national discussion. New problems begin to surface as a result of the actions of stephen douglas in regards to the compromise of 1850. [early 1850s] douglas had larger pol aspirations than just senator and hoped to become president. He wants people to know who he is. He wants to approve legislation that will improve with the economy of his own state. In his effort to improve the economy of his own state he wants to build a railroad across the us. Problem: has to build railroad across (cid:396)unorganized territory(cid:397) must organize this chunk of land. Attempts to organize this land w the kansas nebraska act of 1854 and is bill to organize this area.
