The experience od subjugating the indian tribes had set a precedent for colonial control. Depression of 1890s encouraged business men to look abroad. Pseudo scholars used this as an excuse to dominate other cultures. By 1810, hawaii leaders welcomed american trade. Americans began to buy land, est. sugar plantation. Arrival of newcomers devastated traditional hawaiian society, brought diseases replaced. 1887, us negotiated w hawaii to open a naval base at pearl harbor. 1891, queen liliuokalani challenged the growing american control of the islands. Hawaiians would not accept subservience without a fight. 1893, plantation owners staged a revolution, hawaii annexed in 1898. Bc us imposed tariff on sugar trade, hurt plantation owners. Many american sympathize with the cuban struggle against spain. 1895, the cubas revolted again, spanish acts of war horrified americans.
