Early mental illness was dealt with by trephining= they would drill holes in the skull to let out the bad spirits : caused people to die or become zombie-like. Hippocrates was the 1st to say there was a biological cause of mental illness, related it to an imbalance in the body"s 4 humors. Middle ages= mentally ill people were thought to be possessed because it was explained through religion. Renaissance= considered those afflicted to be witches: see if she floats! . Abnormality= when a behavior/ psychological phenomenon is statistically rare. Deviant from social norms: not always indicative of mental illness, ex: being gay subjective discomfort= causes the person emotional distress or pain, not with personality disorders. Maladaptive= interferes with the ability to function in everyday life. Psychological disorder= pattern of behavior or psychological function that is causing distress, harm to others or self, or harms the ability to function in daily life, subjective discomfort and maladaptive dsm v.
