SOC 3382 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Social Influence, Peer Pressure
Document Summary
Possible aim: prevent drug abuse and its associated harms. Drugs have always been a part of our society. Relative number of people who have alcohol- or tobacco-related problems is small: prevention efforts are focused on teaching people how to coexist with these drugs, there are thoughts on doing the same with illegal drugs. Traditional approach: presentation of negative information about drugs in schools, goal of approach: prevention of drug use, the effectiveness of this approach is tested by checking how many students did subsequently experiment with the drugs. Until the early 1970s, most drug prevention programs were not evaluated. Primary prevention: aimed at young people who have not yet tried drugs, may encourage abstinence but may arouse curiosity in those who have never heard of these drugs. Secondary prevention: aimed at people who have experimented with drugs, goal: prevention of use of more dangerous drugs, example: colleges encouraging responsible use of alcohol.
