Genre films: about the time they are made, not the time they are set. Heroes embody the values a culture holds virtuous; villains embody evil in specific ways. Cinema trades in cultural myth reinforces dominant ideology genre films (as contemporary myths) spread. Popular culture often adheres to dominant ideology. Horror films: genre space that tends to undermine dominant ideology. Difference between horror films: how violence is presented and what ideological purpose it serves. Violence in film: constructed as a reasonable, and often preferable, form of expression. Violence in all it forms (physical, psychic, emotional, spiritual) is foundational to horror films. Green room questions violence as a preferable form of ideological expression. Impossible violence: exists outside of the natural laws of possibility. Realistic violence: is possible in our everyday lives. Fascism: authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of gov and social organizations. Boots and braces: slang for steal toe boots and suspenders.
