PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Ice Pick, Malingering, Internal Validity
Document Summary
Ice pick and a hammer through the eye socket. Ethics is important to consider even if the research methods are legitimate. Intuitive thinking--quick and reflexive thinking where we rely on our first intuitions. This is where we use our critical thinking skills. In order to find a balance between the two, we rely upon the scientific method. Internal validity: the extent to which we can draw cause and effect inferences. External validity: the extent that our findings generalize to real-world settings. More certain that the study will replicate in the real world, not necessarily isolating variables. Watching participants behavior in a real-world setting without trying to manipulate their actions. Risk of paternalism/colonalism (need to understand the culture) Learn new things people have never thought to ask. Examine one person, or a small number of people, over an extended perod of time. Help provide existence proofs: can demonstrate that a phenomenon does.
