COM 315 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Developing Country, Circular Migration
Document Summary
The challenge: finding jobs for the world"s growing population. Between 2015 and 2050, the working age population (ages 15-59) is expected to increase by more than twenty percent. In more developed countries, this trend is barely growing. In contrast, countries with typically high fertility rates (developing), experience substantial young bulges. To keep its working age population from declining, the e. u would need 3. 2 million migrants a year. In contrast, the u. s. is currently receiving more than twice as many migrants as it needs to keep its working age population constant and therefore its population continues to grow. Need immigrants to keep their current levels of economic activity. Need to immigrate/move elsewhere to find jobs. Changes what the workforce looks like in each country. Circular migration: work in one country to earn higher wages but maintain personal, cultural, and political interests by going home on a regular basis. Developing country outward rather than developed country outward.
