CSD 491 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Middle Ear, Eustachian Tube, Mechanical Energy
Document Summary
Important for sound transmission: acts as resonator/amplifier, external auditory canal, assists in localization, up and down. Impacted wax: amplifies, localizes, protects, middle ear, mechanical energy, the middle ear is a box, malleus connects to tympanic membrane, we will see the handle of the malleus. Incus: slightly smaller than malleus, stapes, connects to oval window, oval window, opens up into cochlea, entrance of where sound is transmitted, round window. Exit of sound: eustachian tube, opens and closes because of difference in air pressure, potential to open on both ends, usually closed. Incus is the middle bone of the middle ear: sometimes visible through the tympanic membrane, sometimes you see the shadow, divided into two areas, pars tensa, fibers much tauter than flaccida, pars flaccida. Just the superior portion: fibers are flexible, 3 layers make up the tympanic membrane, outer layer, cartilaginous - most lateral side of ear canal, middle layer, fibrous.
