Computers keep track of what they are doing. Connecting to the internet- data produced increases. Data is a by-product of many devices we currently use. We are collecting and analyzing data about our bodies to improve our health and well being. Medical devices are now internet enabled collecting and reporting various types of biometric data. Devices continuously measure our moods, brain activity, etc. Information a computer system uses to operate or data that is a by-product of that operation. Ex: text message system: messages are data but the accounts that sent and received the message are metadata. A lot of the data generated is a by-product of computing. General practice of accumulating all kinds of data is called big data. The science and engineering for extracting useful information is called. Advertising, car manufactures mine data from cars for making better cars. Transportation department mine data from road sensors to understand driving conditions. Genetic data is mined for medical research.
