Innate : inborn; we are born with the capacity for language. Controls left side quickly but sequentially and forms that occur simultaneously voice, understanding jokes. Right hemisphere is more specialized for the analysis of space and geometrical shapes. In these cases, language was impaired as where right side perceptual and motor skills. Using new technology and techniques, like pet scans, eeg, anaesthetizing one hemisphere, etc, we are able to see hot spots , or areas of the brain that light up when language is being processed. If we numb the right hemisphere; there are no language problems. If we numb the left hemisphere; language is not used. Pinker talks about shadowing and tapping; repeat what someone else is saying while tapping your finger; harder to tap right finger because brain is busy doing language.
