LIN 317 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Sociolinguistics
Document Summary
We generally think of writing and speaking as separate types of skills. But some studies suggest that parts of the writing process may be influenced by the spoken dialect. Ex: cultural conflict on how stories are told. Thus, categorizations of non-standard varieties as illiterate are assuming one kind of literacy. But especially in appalachia, the literary traditions are vibrant and full (just different) And systems that suppress those home varieties, in addition to teacher attitudes toward them, tend to cause more harm than good for student achievement. Language use and unequal relations of power. When we say standard and nonstandard , we are making a judgment about more than just the language. Because standard is simply the language variety that is afforded the most prestige in a given society. And just like sociolinguistics is a two way street, so is the connection between language and power. Variations in language exist because of the power dynamic.
