PS 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Population Ageing, Human Capital
Document Summary
States are an idea that hasn"t always existed. We think of states as being normal, but they really aren"t. Growing individualism undermined collective identity which grounded feudalism. States threatened by violent groups (such as rebels, pirates, and robbers) in ungoverned areas. In the us, we don"t have complete security but generally we don"t live in constant fear. If you"re based almost entirely on tourism you are at risk when natural disasters come through. Why are modern states so weak: changed security environment. Interstate war is rarer than it used to be. Darwinian pressure to evolve: changed economic environment. Globalization has decreased states" power over their economies: trans-territorial claims to authority still matter for newer states, colonial legacy of extraction. They were set up to be exploited and it"s weakened them. The government may be overwrought with greed and not invest in a people. I don"t depend on you in any way.
